World Bicycle Relief – the Buffalo Bike

Fullscreen capture 18052014 43743 PM.bmp

World Bicycle Relief is all about mobilising people through the power of bicycles.

Entrepreneurs, farmers, healthcare workers and students in rural Africa transport heavy loads long distances over rugged terrain to meet basic needs. Compared to walking, bicycles allow people to haul more goods over longer distances in less time – provided the bicycle is strong and durable.

World Bicycle Relief has connected rural Africans with bicycle suppliers; the result is a robust bicycle engineered specifically for rural African terrain and load requirements.

The Buffalo bike is designed, tested and assembled in Africa with close attention to end-user feedback and rigorous quality control. Buffalo bicycles are compatible with locally available spare parts, ensuring that with proper maintenance they will last for years.

We’ve been nominated for a Cycling Luminaries award – Velo City Global Adelaide 2014

We’re so excited that Cyclestyle has been nominated for a Cycling Luminaries Award!

The Cycling Luminaries Awards celebrate the leadership and visions from across Australia and the globe that creates the environment that gets people riding. CycleStyle has been short listed in the ‘Pimp my Bike – Cycle Chic’ category.

The winners will be selected by a panel consisting of 6 experts representing each of the award categories and presented at Velo-city Global,  the world’s leading international urban cycling planning conference, to be held in Adelaide from 27 – 30 May 2014.

We’re thrilled that not only we do we get to shop for our favourite bike gear from all around the world but that our work has been acknowledged to get more people, especially women, riding as an everyday mode of transport.

We look forward to meeting our customers, supporters and many inspirational speakers at Velo-city Globala four day event that will host a program of over 170 presenterssocial activitiescycling tours; offering delegates from around the world a chance to share the best practices for creating and sustaining cycling-friendly cities, where bicycles are valued as part of daily transport and recreation.

And who knows, maybe we’ll bring home a trophy!

Fund Iva Jean’s newest collection on Kickstarter

One of our exclusive brands Iva Jean are funding their newest collection through Kickstarter and need your support.
If Iva Jean are successful in meeting their goal of $50,000, they will be able to put our newest pieces into production. This includes two new pant styles, the City Legging and Trouser, as well as four new ultrafine merino wool tops, the Racer Tunic and Tank, Raglan Long and Short Sleeve.

We particularly like the look the Tunic, a modified racer back dress designed to work alone or layered in colder months. It has a generous cut for movement and zipped pockets for your cash, keys or phone. The Tunic is constructed using 100% ultrafine merino wool and feels so good on. This wool has a soft touch and natural performance qualities including odor resistance, temperature control, and water repellency.

Pair the tunic with the City Legging, which provides a slim silhouette perfect for layering or a tailored look. Constructed of a high performance, four-way stretch (and office appropriate) fabric, they’ve designed the legging to have a high waist, skinny leg, and side zipper for easy entrance.

You can get yours when you support Iva Jean on Kickstarter. Help Iva Jean bring this collection to life!

As many of you know, Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform that allows independent artists, designers, filmmakers and more to bring life to their project. There is a minimum donation of just $1 and rewards for funding of $25+.

Good Cycles – Melbourne Mobile Bike Mechanics and Social Enterprise

Good Cycles Melbourne Bike Mechanics

We recently moved house and office and along with it all our bicycles – a kids balance bike, single speed, ladies step-through, fold up and cargo bike (if that sounds like a lot we got rid of another three before we moved!). Instead of hauling the lot of them to our local bike shop, and being without our mode of transport for days, we called Good Cycles.

Good Cycles Melbourne Bike Mechanics

Good Cycles are mobile bike mechanics whose workshop is based out of Docklands. They ride around the CBD and inner city with their 30+ kg Yuba impressively laden with tools, parts and accessories, servicing bikes in people’s offices, universities and at your home.

Good Cycles Melbourne Bike Mechanics

Good Cycles Melbourne Bike Mechanics

That means you don’t need to be without your bike on your commute and your errands and don’t have to spend your lunch hour or weekends getting your bike fixed. How often do you put off getting your bike serviced because it’s too much hassle? (Guilty as charged).

Good Cycles Melbourne Bike Mechanics

Good Cycles rode their cargo bike over to my house and set up in their mobile workshop in my backyard. For almost three hours Mike the mechanic checked, greased, aligned and pumped our bikes, giving them the kind of attention that they hadn’t received in a long time. A standard service costs $77 or you can upgrade to higher levels of service for $120 and $170. Their prices are commensurate with the prices for most local bike shops and they offer discounts for group bookings too.

Good Cycles Melbourne Bike Mechanics

Not only is getting your bike serviced by Good Cycles more convenient than taking your bike to a bike shop, the business is also a social enterprise. They teach people in need, such as long term unemployed and homeless, to be bike mechanics (an in-demand job). They work with Melbourne City Mission, job agencies, and the Youth Support and Advocacy to recruit trainees into the program then during the 18 month program, participants are employed as trainees, completing on-and-off the job training in Certificate III in Bicycles and teamed with qualified bike mechanics. The traineeship includes accredited training, employment, personal support and assistance with transition into the open labour market with an option to complete an apprenticeship if they opportunity arises.

Good Cycles also run workshops and classes in bike maintenance and help local governments and community organisations deliver bicycle-based programs. All the profits from the business go back to supporting, training and engaging the people they help.

So with Good Cycles you can get your bike serviced, save time and support a good cause. Win-win for everyone!

Velo-city Global 2014 in Adelaide

velo city

Velo-city Global is the world’s premier international cycling conference. Delegates from around the world have the opportunity to share best practices for creating and sustaining cycling-friendly cities where bicycles are valued as part of daily transport and recreation.

In 2014 Velo-city Global is coming to Adelaide!  Did you know that Adelaide is ranked in world’s top 10 cities to visit by Lonely Planet in 2014?

Keynote speakers at Velo-city Global 2014 Adelaide will include those who have successfully transformed some of the world’s biggest cities including New York Transport Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan, Copenhagenize CEO Mikael Colville-Anderson and Ethan Kent, Vice President, Project for Public Spaces.

The conference has an anticipated attendance of around 800 international and local delegates from a range of industries including health & fitness, tourism, local government, recreation, transport, sustainability, and engineering.

In addition to the conference, Velo-fringe is Adelaide’s newest festival.  Held from 18-30 May 2014, in the lead up to the Velo-city Global Conference, it will be a celebration of bikes and cycling.

If you’ve got an idea for a bike-related event – a ride, a tour, a talk, an exhibit, a debate, etc – you can take part, simple as that. There is a small registration fee and that gets you a listing on the Velo-fringe website and in the programme, plus assistance in finding a venue if you need it. It’s a great opportunity to spread the good news about cycling.
