‘Boun appetito by bike’ celebrated everything Italian in the inner west with tour guide Joyce Watts of CycleStyle and MEL: HOT OR NOT.

In the 1950s Footscray was a centre for Italian migrants. Sixty years later eleven female cyclists joined Joyce to experience how Italian cuisine has been reinterpreted for modern Australians with a three course meal by bike.

CycleStyle at The Upmarket – Saturday 7 November

The Upmarket - 1 (2)

As Christmas creeps closer our market schedule gets busier – and we’re kicking off with The Upmarket, Melbourne’s newest design market.

The outdoor market is held in the forecourt between the Malthouse Theatre and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art in Southbank every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, rain hail or shine.

Stallholders are picked by a design panel, with a focus on local emerging designers and producers, and divided into three precincts – the Design District, the Larder and the Heart of Dining. At each market there’s a revolving selection of furniture, lighting, homewares, accessories, fashion, jewellery, ceramics, food and produce vendors plus free children’s and adults creative workshops.

We’ll be at The Upmarket with lots of cycling goodies and market-only specials at the next market, Saturday 7 November 9am-4pm!

Introducing the Notabag – the bag that converts into a backpack from Frankfurt, Germany

notabag

Notabag is a smart combination of a bag and a backpack. With a single pull on the straps, it transforms itself from a sleek eco-friendly reusable bag to an easy-to-carry backpack. Its versatility allows you to carry it in your hands as well as comfortably on your shoulders. We’re so excited to be the first Australian retailer of the Notabag!

notabag

The Notabag idea was born during Adnan Alicusic’s trip to the local farmers market. It was one of those situations that we can all identify with – the grocery bag filled up very quickly and he still had to ride his bike home.

Things got pretty tricky once he found himself in the middle of busy city traffic, trying to manoeuvre a bike with a heavy shopping bag on the handlebar, bumping against the front wheel. At that moment, he started visualising how a simple bag could be transformed into a backpack.

After spending months of prototyping and testing, Adnan and his friend and fashion designer Ilaria Gregianin, introduced a smart way to combine a bag and a backpack as a Kickstarter project. The Notabag even folds up into a small pocket for those times when you need a bag unexpectedly!

notabag

It is made in Europe from cotton and rip-stop nylon. The fabric provides the product with sturdiness and soft touch of cotton fabric, yet it is still lightweight and water-resistant like the rip-stop nylon.

Notabag has been nominated for a German design award and ranked as Frankfurt’s Top 10 startups in 2015. They recently collaborated with Swedish bike brand Bookman to make a reflective Notabag especially for cyclists. We think you’ll love it as much as we do!

Westie Women’s Foodie Rides – Bookings now open!

Thanks to Maribyrnong City Council we’ve teamed up with The Squeaky Wheel to bring you the Westie Winter Warmers ride, the first in a series of foodie cycling tours for women exploring Melbourne’s west.

Explore the global cuisines of the inner west this winter while getting out and exploring the west on your bike. What better way to stay warm than pedalling your way from one gastronomic delight to the next?

Join us over ninety minutes for the Westie Winter Warmers ride on Saturday 18th July for a discovery tour of local specialities. We’ll be kicking off at 12:30pm in Footscray and I will introduce some of my favourite local purveyors of delicious warming lamb skewers, Salvadorean papusas, croissants and hot chocolate and cannoli.

This is one bicycle tour that won’t be leaving you hungry and as a bonus, you’ll also be building your confidence getting around the west on a bike with a bunch of like-minded ladies as we pedal around Footscray.

There’s only ten places on this ride. Tickets are $10 per person (lots of food included!) and they’ll fill up fast so be sure to book your ticket and make sure you don’t miss out. Is there a better way to spend a wintery Saturday afternoon?

ErinBerzelPhotography-4011_1024x1024

The Bicycle Wine Rack is one of our best-selling items at CycleStyle but we realise that not everyone is a wine drinker.

So, we bring you the Six Pack Bicycle Frame Cinch for the beer drinkers!

Honoured by Architizer as one of the Ten Best Bike-related Design Innovations of 2011, this leather frame cinch secures just about anything somewhat narrow to your top tube – such a six-pack of beer, a bike polo mallet, newspaper, umbrella or kayak paddle!

The six-pack rests nicely between your knees (not knocking into them!).

Each frame cinch has been handmade in Portland, Oregon by leather specialist workshop Walnut Studiolo

Here are some raves about the Six Pack Bicycle Frame Cinch:

A picnic for Melbourne Cup Day

We are taking an extra long weekend break from Friday 2 November to Thursday 8 November due to Melbourne Cup Day public holiday on Tuesday 6 November.

The online store will still be open and receiving orders during this period and any orders will dispatch from Thursday 8 November.

In the meantime, Melbourne Cup and the Spring Racing Carnival has got us thinking about picnics. More specifically, this bike pannier/picnic basket by Netherlands-based designer Jeriël Bobbe of Bloon Design.

© Bloon Design

‘Springtime’ has panels that rest over the top of your bike’s back rack like panniers. To set up your picnic, the pannier sides fold out to transform into square bench seats, while a top panel opens into a small table.

Apparently Bloon Design intends to have a web store for purchases available soon. We’d love to test-drive one this Spring!
